Obsolete and a relevant technology

Week-2

DVDs

The first technology I would like to mention is DVDs. Sounds familiar right? It is a digital optical disc data storage format invented in 1995 and released in late 1996. It definitely played a role in some period of most peoples lives. We used to go to these DVD stores to purchase the discs we wanted. Nowadays, we mostly prefer to digitize and save them on our local drive or media servers instead. Its not completely obsolete as there are still those who buy DVDs from Amazon, eBay or other shopping sites. While, It is easy to identify that DVDs are losing its popularity, even just from the fact that new laptops coming out usually not containing a DVD drive.

YouTube

We all heard about YouTube and its popularity. It definitely is the biggest video platform to ever exist. It also is the 2nd largest search engine next to Google. It's one of the most effective ways to reach a large audience, whether you're advertising a program or informing individuals. Did you know where the idea came from? Founders Hurley and Chen say that the original idea was a video version of an online dating service, and had been influenced by the website Hot or Not. They created posts on Craigslist asking attractive women to upload videos of themselves to YouTube in exchange for a $100 reward. We see that they definitely accomplished something a lot superior. It is still one of the most relevant social media platforms and seems to involve in our lives for some more time.
